The first step toward knowing God is receiving Jesus as our Lord and Savior and asking Him, by the perfect blood that He shed for us on the cross, to wash us clean from our sins. This is salvation from damnation, a critical step but only the first step.

Once cleansed we become a fit temple for the Holy Spirit, whereupon we ask Jesus to baptize us in His Holy Spirit. This is the new birth by which we become "born again" and new creatures in Christ. Old things have passed away and all things have become new. By the Spirit, we become children of God and are able to cry out to Him, "Abba, Father."
